Neem( Azadirachta indica ) is a tree of mahogany family Meliaceae . Also known as Margo , Nimba , Indian lilac is one of the important medicinal plants from ancient times and is extensively used in Ayurvedic medicines and remedies.
Neem contains alkaloids that have antiviral and antifungal properties. It is used in various traditional ayurvedic formulations for it’s antiseptic properties. It is used to cure conditions like skin diseases, diabetes, inflammatory diseases, fever , burns , wounds , worm infestation, itching etc .
All parts of the Neem tree , leaves, flower , seeds, fruits, roots and bark are useful . Mostly the bark , leaf and oil are used in ayurvedic formulations. Neem has bitter and astringent taste , cooling effect and has kapha – pitta dosha alleviating properties. Neem is indicated in various diseases due to its anti inflammatory, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal and anti helminthic properties.
Neem is a rich source of vitamin E which helps repair damaged skin cells. It’s anti inflammatory property helps reduce acne , inflammation of gastro intestinal tract, prevent constipation, gastric ulcers , flatulence, enhance appetite and boost digestion. It’s anti fungal and anti bacterial property helps eliminate dandruff, cure scalp infections like folliculitis, reduce dryness and hair thinning problems. It is effective against ringworm, nail infections, athletes foot etc. Neem is very effective against wide range of insects like mosquitos , flies and mites.
Important formulations of Neem are nimbadi kashaya, nimbamrthasava , nimbaadyarishta , nimbadi choorna , nimbamrthadi eranda taila etc. Various formulations of Neem in the form of choorna or paste can use externally to cure skin conditions like pimples , acne , eczema, wounds , ulcers , burning sensation and inflammation. Decoction made out of stem , bark and leaves of Neem is useful in treatment of fever and as blood purifier to clear all toxins from blood. Twigs of Neem is used for cleaning teeth and in diseases associated with mouth, teeth and gums.
